About PMP

PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is a well recognized certification for project managers, offered by PMI (the Project Management Research Institute, USA). This certification is based on the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK), by PMI. PMBOK comprises of the collective wisdom of  thousands of project management managers world wide. Every four years a major revision happens to this document, and the current version is Version 4.0, which was released in October 2008.

Organization of PMBOK

PMBOK comprises of 42 processes, grouped into 9 knowledge areas and 5 process groups.

The 9 knowledge areas comprise of;

  • Integration management
  • Time management
  • Cost management
  • Scope management
  • Quality management
  • Risk management
  • Human resource management
  • Communications management
  • Procurements management

The 5 process groups comprise of;

  • Initiation
  • Planning
  • Execution
  • Monitoring and controlling
  • Closing

Every process of the 42 processes corresponds to one knowledge area and one process group.

For example “Develop project charter” process is part of ‘Project integration management” knowledge area and the ‘Initiation’ process group.

Strategy for preparation for the PMP examination

PMP certification examination is a four hour, 200 questions online exam. During this four hour test, the participants are required to choose the best answer out of four almost correct answers. In order to pass PMP, three things are vital;

  • Knowledge about the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK)
  • Some experience of working in projects (need not be in the capacity of  a project manager)
  • Exam practice (based on a good sample of questions, covering the nine knowledge areas)

These are the steps for preparation;

  • Earn 35 contact hours by attending  the PMdistilled three day workshop (look at the schedules page) to find a program near you.
  • In case you are living in a city, where the PMdistilled program is not delivered, then you can enroll for the instructor led e-learning program, which is delivered over the internet. For the schedules, contact me at  abrachan@pmrinstitute.com

Post course preparation suggestion

  • Read the PMBOK latest version, just to understand the structure
  • Read the course material provided by us
  • Take the practice tests (exam simulator given to you at the end of the program)
  • Once you take all the practice tests, then you will know the knowledge areas where you are strong and the ones where you are weak.
  • Do more preparation around those knowledge areas where you are weak
  • At some point in time, you will start scoring around 80%, for the practice tests. This is the time, when you should attempt the real PMP credential exam.

  • The reference material provided to you
  • The PMdistilled e-learning module provided to you
  • The practice tests provided to you
  • Post course clarifications with the instructor

While taking the exam….

  • Self confidence is the key to success. The exam is a test of your ability to concentrate for 4 hours continuously
  • ‘A never say die’ attitude is very important while taking the exams
  • If you dont know the answers for some questions, you can just mark them and proceed, and these questions will come back towards the end of the exam.
  • Every question has 4 options. Out of these 4 options, it is always easy to eliminate two, and from the remaining two, you will have to pick up the most correct answer. Some exam practice will come in handy here.
  • Some of the questions could be very confusing, dont allow such questions to affect your self confidence.
  • After a while, questions will become easier and easier.
